The Apex Legends cross-play beta is right around the corner

As we’ve known for some time now, Apex Legends is going to support cross play. However, before now we hadn’t received an official release date on when to expect it. Thanks to Respawn’s latest update post, we now know the beta is closer than expected. You’ll be able to try out cross play as early as Tuesday, October 6.

Cross-play is becoming an increasingly popular addition in many battle royale. We’ve already seen Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite implement it and now Apex is set to follow. When it’s introduced, cross-play will let you play Apex Legends with friends regardless of platform. The beta will support PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

For many, this update is considered the next step for EA’s world famous battle royale. Apex Legends has already been responsible for implementing many genre defining features. So it’s lack of cross-play did feel a little out of place.

Cross-play will be enabled by default however users will have a toggle option to turn it off. This will be easily accessible via the in-game settings. If you’re playing on Xbox One though you will also have to enable or disable the console’s cross-play option. This can be found in the System Settings application.

Once you’re partied up you’ll have access to everything a regular Apex Legends squad would. That includes voice chat, pinging communication, and text chat. Unfortunately, this update won’t be including cross-progression. According to Respawn, this will be discussed as a potential update closer to the Steam launch later this year.

Finally, the addition of cross-play has seem some adjustments made to the Apex Legends matchmaking algorithm. When a PC player is in a lobby you will always be placed in a primarily PC populated game. This is to prevent mouse and keyboard players being matched with controller players where possible.

Hitman 3 Final Chapter: Mark January 2021 On Your Calendars

We got introduced to the secret world of assassins in the first Hitman games, which also gained screen treatment through the movie of the same title. Timothy Olyphant was superb in his portrayal of the nameless assassin, well backed up by the seemingly helpless damsel in distress character of Olga Kurylenko. In the gaming universe, the story of Agent 47 comes full circle, as Hitman 3 is set to arrive in January 2021.

Last Patch Arriving for Hitman 2

In a report dated November 2019, the series’ predecessor — Hitman 2 — received its final patch on the November update. That was some months ago. Since then, Hitman 3 has been the focus of the developers. It is also a confirmation of what IO said was a ‘trilogy’ of games that followed Agent 47’s travel.

At this point, Hitman 3 will be launching after the arrival of next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. During the time the last few major patches for Hitman 2 was released, it was still in development — or the middle of development, as it appears. The speculations look correct, as it would be releasing in early 2021.

Agent 47 Comes Full Circle

The journey that Agent 47 started in the first Hitman outing will finally conclude in Hitman 3. Here, the world of assassination will once again welcome the enigmatic assassin. As always, the stakes are high, and 47’s contracts are never simple. It will take him around the world, always looking dapper and dashing in his preferred suit.

This time, Agent 47 has an extra hand from his agency handler, Diana Burnwood, as well as his long-lost friend, Lucas Grey. Their mission will be to eliminate the partners of Providence, but — as with all games in the genre — things turn sour on the way to their prey. Agent 47 will be thrust in unfamiliar territory and find himself trying to adjust as the situation develops.

Watch The World Come Alive

The locations in the Hitman saga have always been luxurious. Some have also been exotic and packed with high stakes action. You take control of Agent 47 as he tries to explore these masterfully rendered locations and follow clues and pointers toward where the Agent must eliminate targets. Part of the fun is in the planning and execution of these assassinations. You can choose to disguise yourself or create little accidents, no matter how you see it fit.

It is in attention to these details that the game is truly appreciated. Blend in with the crowds, anonymous, and watch your plan unfold. You could also interact with other characters on the path to your ultimate goal. From these decisions, you could watch your plan unfold in glorious 4k – or see it burn down to the ground. You can also watch as the world reacts to everything you do, thanks to the award-winning Glacier technology by IO.

The Finale Comes After A Long Wait

Long-time fans of the franchise will get a feeling of delight in knowing that they can choose whichever way they want to play the assassin — sleek and sophisticated or bumbling and clumsy. Exploration and interaction are huge parts in this gameplay, rewarding players who have that extra streak of curiosity and insight in succeeding re-plays of the game. The game rewards players who immerse themselves in the world of assassination.

Players will also find it fascinating that the series allows for continuation, even from other games. Hitman 3 will allow those who have played and finished Hitman 2 to carry over their character progression as well as discovered locations into the game. With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X boasting playability from the very first games in their series, the upcoming game will be able to receive content from the very first game up to the second.

IO Interactive will develop the last game in the franchise. The developers felt it was a natural choice for Hitman 3 to come directly from them to the players who have followed Agent 47 from the start. They also stated that they felt ready for the challenge and will look forward to completing the journey with the players and the entire community alongside them.

The game’s launch is in January 2021 for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. In the meantime, there are other free PC games available for players who can’t wait to put their trigger finger to the test.

The Persona series is one of my favorite JRPG franchises to date. Once known as the Shin Megami Tensei series, it still shares the moniker, this spin off iteration has fans at hype level 100. Set to drop on April 4th, 2017 for both the PS3 and PS4 here are 5 reason why players should check out the Persona 5.

It has a Rich History

As mentioned above, Persona is an offshoot of the Shin Megami Tensei series. As the 5th installment in the franchise, this game that started out as a dungeon crawler dating/social sim is still delighting fans today. Most fans may have come in with Persona 3 but most know Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden for the Vita. This series has earned it’s stripes and definitely has earned the love of the fans that it has today. Not to mention it has spawned several spin offs in the form of a fighting game, SRPG and rhythm game that are all all canonical so yeah, all the Persona you could ask for.

It’s Not Ashamed To Be Turn Based

That’s right, this is a reason to be hyped for the game. It has long been stated that turn based combat is outdated and has lost its luster with gamers but Persona proves otherwise. Not only does it have turn based combat but it’s unapologetic about it. The combat is fun and keeps you on your toes even though it’s not a hack and slash fest. All combat types have their place but it’s refreshing to have one of the JRPG staples present in a main stream game again.

The art style of the game has only improved with each generation and has made it mark by retaining it’s signature look in each installment. This time around the game almost has a comic book super hero art style along with the signature portraits for each main character. The graphics are ps3 era fare but it’s polished and smooth so even graphics enthusiasts can enjoy it.

The Music is Awesome

The music is so great in the series that it spawned a rhythm game using the Persona 4 soundtrack called Persona 4: Dancing All Night. It doesn’t matter what you are doing in the game there is always a tune to hum in your head. Even if you’re tackling the same content over and over again it never becomes grating on the ears or annoying. The battle music for the game has me excited to bash shadows in the face. This game has a reported 100 or more hours of game play so I’ll probably be very familiar with the soundtrack when its all said and done.

If you’re not familiar with the series, Persona has had a tough time being sold in the states. In Persona 3 in order to summon your persona the players simulated suicide by shooting themselves in the head. Yikes. I was intrigued by the dark theme of the game even though there was a dating/social sim connected. In Persona 5, players become a group called the Phantom Thieves with the goal of reforming the corrupted hearts of adults by stealing them. The previous games have discussed survivor guilt, addiction, sexual orientation etc. You name it and it was probably in Persona with more to come. Don’t let the anime style and dating sim fool you. This game is not for children and can appeal to the real life scenarios

Mass Effect Andromeda Is Almost Here And Players Can Try It For 10 Hours

Players will get to create a male or female version of their “Ryder” character. Unfortunately though, you can only choose the human race as an avatar. The same was true for the first Mass Effect games but I think players were hoping for something different. Speaking of characters, there has been some coverage about the unnatural movements and mo-cap of the human species in the game. The alien races are fine so that doesn’t surprise me. Don’t be taken back by some of the make up choices for the human women especially.

It should go without saying but this game is not a continuation of the previous Mass Effect trilogy. Starting with a note from Pathfinder Alec Ryder the game is ready for players to immerse themselves in it’s universe. As you progress through the story and get a feel for Ryder, you will notice that even the main character is different from Shepard. They appear more youthful, inexperienced and have more of a personality than the previous iteration. Shepard is still a great character but this one may be different.

To give a bit of back story, Ryder and the crew wake up after being asleep for centuries on the Ark Hyperion to try and find new planets to inhabit. Unfortunately when you wake up its not all sunshine and roses. Players land on a new planet with hostile everything waiting to kill you as a warm welcome.

There Are A Slew Of New Game Mechanics

This game is still a 3rd person shooter and the controls seem to be smoother than before. There are a few notable changes to gleaned. One is that there is no longer a button mapped to put your character into cover. Ryder will hide and crouch almost automatically when you come near certain things in the environment. Players are no longer trapped into one build which promoted multiple play throughs to try different play styles in the previous games. Instead, players can customize their characters to take different skills from categories in their respective skill trees. One last thing I’ll note is the introduction of the dash mechanic which can change the tactical tide of battle. It does have a slight cool down but it can save you from life of death with the better AI of enemies.

The Online Multiplayer Is More of the Same

There is no player versus player mode which is normal for the Mass Effect series. However, if you have played games like Rainbow 6 Siege, when you go into Multiplayer mode you can choose different archetypes for battle. Those characters can also be of a different races so that may be the players only opportunity to play something new. There are also loot boxes to buy with in game currency or money for new weapon mods and new characters. The rest is business as usual with new things to be added after the game is released.

Your Demo Progress Transfers Over and All Upcoming DLC Will be Free

You read correctly. The demo will save your progress so no time is wasted thank goodness. Bio ware is also doing us a service and will not charge for DLC that most of us probably can’t afford at this point anyway. The DLC schedule hasn’t been released yet but hopefully they will support this game for the long haul.

I’m an African American woman and seeing a lead protagonist that fits in any of those categories is rare in the video game space. At this point in my life, I’m 30, it’s one of those things that I have come to accept. Note, not okay with, but accept as the norm for the genre.

The targeted demographic for video games is normally white, straight men between the ages of 15 to 30. So imagine my surprise and joy that as more games have come out recently that conversation has begun to change. That is where Horizon Zero Dawn comes in and I would like to take a second to appreciate the strides with diversity taken in the game.

The Lead Protagonist In Horizon Is A Woman

Aloy, our beautiful red haired wild girl, is the lead protagonist in Horizon. While a lot of games that feature a woman lead tend to focus on her “woman-ness” this game did the exact opposite. It needs to be said more often, but when it comes to diversity people that fit multiple minority groups don’t need it to be explicitly stated in the game or narrative.

Aloy could have easily been Alan and the story would not change that much if at all.

Kudos Guerrilla for doing this despite Sony’s initial reservations about the choice.

The Population In Horizon Is Diverse

I’m going to be frank, in a lot of dystopian games it appears like the only survivors of the apocalypse are white. It is rare that I see games take the time to flesh out the world to include other ethnic groups. I’m not going to sit here and say that these companies are racist or other extreme things. But I will say that it is an over sight that has not gone unnoticed.

It may appear like in the years of “PC” culture and people becoming too “sensitive” that we are being inundated with these complaints. I am here to tell you that in the black community we have had these conversations among ourselves and we have them a lot. I am sure that other groups who feel under represented have done the same. So while it may be new to main stream it isn’t new to the rest of us who have to live with this reality every day.

It’s obvious, it’s lazy and it makes me wish they didn’t bother. That wasn’t the case in Horizon where all of the NPCS Asian, Black, White etc each had a very polished and true to life look. I almost shed a tear when I saw the first black person and their hair. MY GOD THEIR HAIR! Hair, which they almost never get correct, looked as glorious as their skin. Thank you Guerrilla.

The Narrative Doesn’t Fall Into Familiar Stereotypes

I mentioned it a bit earlier but it needs to be said again. I appreciate that the story did not focus on Aloy being a woman and the issues that women face. There was no talk of her being weaker than a man or even romance options. As a matter of fact I was a bit sad that Aloy didn’t get to choose someone to romance male or female. But that wasn’t the focus of the story to be told here so those aspects did not get any shine. Her sexuality was not on the table at all to the point where any advances made by other characters felt a bit out of place.

I also appreciate that there were no separations of the tribes by race. There were things that separated each group to be sure but colorism was not one of them. If you follow the narrative [Spoiler] closely you will find that one of the researchers did a thing to make sure that mistake would not be able to be repeated again. Or at least not repeated in the same way come hell or high water.

I have been playing a lot of story intense games over the last few weeks. 2017 has been churning out some real winners at the start of this year. Tales of Berseria has tugged at my heart strings and so has the critical and commercial darling, Horizon Zero Dawn. However, the game that I want to talk about today may have flown under the radar since so many great games have arrived. That game is called Night in the Woods and I present to you 5 things you should know about before you start.

Not an adventure game like Horizon is an adventure game. More like how Broken Age is an adventure game. It’s a side scroll game that has player take the main protagonist Mae through her hick town. Just about everything can be interacted with but may only open up once you reach certain parts of the story. It has been great searching around the town to see what new things you can reach. I make sure to travel everywhere before I make any major commitments to see what pieces of dialogue I may uncover. Mae is able to climb on wires and roofs of buildings so make sure to look around.

Or Daria for the new millennium whichever you prefer. Even though the characters are animals the commentary is surely not cutesy at all. The dialogue tackles some serious issues like being a college drop out, failing to meet parental expectations, bad break ups etc. You name it and its in here. The dialogue is smart, witty and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Even if all the plot points don’t resonate with you I’m sure someone in town will.

There Is Also Rhythm Game Play Involved

Did I mention that the Mae was in a band before she came back from school? Well she was and her friends are psyched to bring her back into the fold. I wasn’t prepared to be thrown into a rhythm game where you needed to coordinate 3 buttons. And unfortunately I don’t believe the difficulty can be adjusted for it. There is no real penalty for failing but I’m sure there is a trophy for being successful.

The Possum Springs Is A Town Is Full of Personality

I’m not from a small town but I could imagine if I was everyone would know your name. In this town everyone does know your character which is refreshing because of their dialogue. They also have distinct personalities so u may find yourself liking the townsfolk better than Bea. I especially enjoy the bear who writes poems or the penguin right next to her that has nothing but asshole stuff to say to you every day. Mae also has a computer that you can use to interact with your friends which gives a real sense of immersion.

There Is A Mystery Afoot

From the very beginning of the game there is an a sense that before Mae left something went down. Some of the towns people mention it but they don’t ignore you because of it. The main character herself makes it seems like it’s something that shouldn’t be talked about it. At some point this comes to the forefront so you will be thrust into that part of the adventure as well.

Show, Don’t Tell: Horizon: Zero Dawn vs. Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I’m having a lot of fun with Horizon: Zero Dawn, and I am also a big fan of game narrative, but sometimes there are just too many words. Today I’m going to compare the design styles of the new Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the aforementioned Horizon. Specifically, how they use (or don’t use) voiced narration to lead the player.

In the first few minutes of Horizon: Zero Dawn’s gameplay, the protagonist, Aloy, points out what’s going on in the environment. Verbally. Even though there’s no one around to hear her. You could argue that you’re hearing her “thoughts,” or that she’s talking to herself because she’s scared, but neither case is a good excuse.

Aloy will describe her surroundings, talk about what she should be doing next, talk about what she just did, and ultimately treats the player like a blind person with short-term memory loss. It’s as though the writer wrote a book and adapted it verbatim for the game, cutting out the he-saids and she-saids and leaving everything else.

Again, I love game narrative. I think games are a powerful storytelling medium. But just because a game can have more words written or lines spoken, certainly doesn’t mean it should. Ideally, the player should be able to play the game with the volume and subtitles off, using only art and design cues to figure out what to do next.

Look at Breath of the Wild. While it’s a longstanding tradition for Link to not speak, many Zelda games since Ocarina of Time gave the player a talking companion who points out everything you need to know. Navi, Midna, the… blue person from Skyward Sword whose name I forget. They all helped lead the player without needing Link to speak a word.

But in Breath of the Wild, like the original Zelda games of yore, has no quest-long companion jabbering in Link’s pointy ear. The game simply trusts the player to figure things out on their own.

The ironic part is that Zelda is a game for kids and adults alike on a Nintendo platform that facilitates new gamers. Horizon: Zero Dawn is rated T for teen, and requires the player to use a PS4 controller and its dual-analog configuration that new gamers struggle with.

In essence, Horizon: Zero Dawn holds the player’s hand despite there being very little chance that the player is someone new at games, while Breath of the Wild trusts the player to figure things out without someone yapping at them the whole time.

It’s easy to look at games like Horizon: Zero Dawn as the way of the future and games like Zelda to be relics of the past. But with these two game releases, both at nearly the same time, the “relic” has shown itself to be much more comfortable as a game. And future designers—especially narrative designers—should take note.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor was More, and Less, than Meets the Eye (of Sauron)

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was an arcade-style beat-‘em-up in the guise of an open-world adventure game.

The 2014 game, which will be getting a sequel soon, boasted the unique “Nemesis System”, which allowed the game’s orcs to have power struggles, comment on the player’s previous actions, and allow for personalized game experiences.

With the Nemesis System, orcs levelled up with the player. They began at the bottom of the food chain, and as the player advanced time (usually through death), the orcs would beat each other up to gain status and new abilities. If the player were to be killed by an orc and fight them again later, the orc might say, “Didn’t I already kill you?” Or if the player “killed” an orc in a particular battle, the supposedly-dead orc might reappear with a scar or burn mark, ready to take revenge.

Nobody stayed dead in that game, apparently. I mean, the protagonist dies at the beginning. But it’s okay because he’s got a ghost possessing him? But the ghost is an elf? I don’t really remember the details. Anyway.

It was a well-praised system that ultimately acted as window dressing for killing scores of orcs, which, in most games of this type, would all look exactly the same. Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis System gave personality and history to the orcs and their respective clans, driving the player to more meaningful encounters.

Here’s the thing. Shadow of Mordor wasn’t a very deep game.

It had a beautiful, if mostly bland, open world, and some requisite collectibles scattered around. It had some fun with the Lord of the Rings universe, but never reached the heights of the books. It didn’t have a smorgasbord of minigames or filler quests, like an Assassin’s Creed. And it didn’t have a huge cast of fun characters, like the Arkham Games.

If it were a book genre, it would be sword and sorcery, rather than high fantasy. And as a game, I’d sooner call it an arcadey action game rather than an epic adventure game. And that’s great.

Shadow of Mordor came out at the very end of September, 2014. The previous big game was Destiny, which came out at the very beginning of the month. And the next major release wouldn’t be until November, when all the typical AAA releases came out. In short, it was a fairly dry time of the year (assuming you wanted a break from Destiny). Shadow of Mordor was a snack between big meals.

And I think there’s a market for that.

A “good enough” game, released in a slow season, to tide players over until the full-course AAAs can come out to play. Shadow of Mordor was a tight game, with fun action, that didn’t try to be more than it needed to.

Not every game needs world-ending stakes and gigantic set pieces and NPCs with filler quests to pad out the game length. I preferred the lean focus of Shadow of Mordor over the bloated Arkham Knight and the stretched-too-thin Assassin’s Creed: Unity. And I could still enjoy the open adventure format that games like Bayonetta didn’t deliver.

With all this said, I’m open for a bigger and better version of this game with Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. Maybe it’ll be the Assassin’s Creed 2 to Shadow Mordor’s Assassin’s Creed 1. Or it’ll just be more arcadey orc-killin’, which would be fine with me. I just really, really hate orcs. Maybe I should talk to someone about that…

Resident Evil 7, the top selling game of last January, will be having its new downloadable content entitled, ‘Not a Hero’. Oh, and heads up! There will be spoilers here. So, if you have not finished the main storyline of the video game yet, please finish it first. Remember, you have been warned. Enjoy!

Meet the new Chris Redfield

After all the released downloadable contents from Capcom that gave us a glimpse of the life of the Bakers, Capcom twitted the following in their official twitter account:

…and they finally answered the question that people has been asking after finishing the main storyline, “Was that really Chris Redfield in the ending of the main game (Resident Evil 7)?”

Still, many of us are still begging for an answer for this one question, how did Chris transform from this:

Chris Redfield will be starring in Resident Evil 7’s latest downloadable content entitled, ‘Not a Hero’. Yep, he will probably have that Solid Snake vibe saying, “I’m no hero, never was”; saying that he’s only hired to do some job. This downloadable content will be out this coming Spring. So, watch out for it, mark your calendars and prepare for more Chris Redfield.

What will the new DLC be about?

Yeah, this was a bummer…tell me you were like, “Wait…what?”, just like I was.

There are a lot of speculations as to what the whole downloadable content will be about. Especially now that Capcom hinted in their tweet that Chris will be chasing someone or something. One of the speculations is that, the DLC will feature Chris and his hunt for our beloved Lucas Baker. Yep, the one and only trap-and-party-loving-psychopath-that-blew-a-freaking-cake-for-fun Lucas. A lot of people speculated this because he is the only survivor of the Baker family and Umbrella might want something from him. Which brings us to one more speculation, the DLC will answer the question on how our beloved Chris Redfield become an Umbrella agent. Yes, Umbrella, that pharmaceutical and medical company-slash-organization that started the whole virus thing? I am sure you have heard of them.

The last speculation is the former two combined. Some say that the latest DLC will start from how Chris Redfield became an agent of Umbrella Corporation, to him ending up saving Ethan – and Mia, depending on the player’s choices – from the Bakers, and end with Chris confronting Lucas Baker. If so, we may be subject to another ‘game’ by that crazy, yet brilliant, psychopath.

5 Things To Get Hype About NieR Automata

NieR Automata has been released in Japan while in America we have to wait with bated breath for another month. Automata is the sequel to Platinum Games original title NieR that was released in 2010. There has been a lot of excitement surrounding this game due to the well received demos released in December. For some, the name NieR may be new since it’s coming sandwiched between Horizon Zero Dawn and Zelda. To help those that may have missed the information about the game, here are 5 things to get hype about NieR Automata.

This game takes place in the distant future where humanity is at risk yet again. The Council of Humanity decides to deploy android soldiers to combat the threat using their newest unit YoRHa. These androids will be fighting against more machines to wage a war that may uncover many of humanities forgotten truths.

The Characters Have Mysteries All Their Own

Reading through the character bios on the official NieR site, it seems like the android soldiers are a mystery. The androids assigned to the YoRHa unit appear to have very strict rules set for them. The androids are only assigned code numbers with no real names. They are encouraged to stifle their emotions even though they all have unique personalities. In the demo, players are introduced to new YoRHa unit 2B, environmental research companion 9S and YoRHa obsolete prototype, A2. The characters also have unique battle styles and, at the moment, I am unsure how many players will get to try.

The Setting is Dystopian and Open World

Incoming open world fatigue. The game is beautiful of course and there is a lot of it. The game camera switches perspectives to top down in some encounters or seemingly 2-D as 2B wall runs. The setting gives me a steam punk vibe but there are only a few screenshots of the world at large available. From the demo we know that a bulk of humanity is on the moon so running into other people may not happen often.

Prepare for an Action Based Battle Experience

The combat is action based using a mix of light and heavy attacks. Players will be able to block as well to create strategies when taking down foes in the open landscape. The rest of the action combat staples follow like free range of motion, jumping, rolling etc. 2B is the master at slinging around a very huge sword with the fluidity to make a Samurai jealous. 2B also has a robot drone at her disposal to dish out some additional damage.

The Game Is Available For Preorder

The game is available for preorder and has a collector’s edition set for those interested. The Collector’s Edition includes a 2B figuring, steel book case, art book, original sound track, the game and bonus DLC of different skins and accessories. The cost for all of this may be a little steep so waiting for reviews is also an option.
