Nintendo Switch 2 owners hoping to explore the haunting beauty of the Lands Between will need to wait a bit longer. FromSoftware has officially delayed Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition from its original 2025 release window to sometime in 2026. The studio cited “performance adjustments” as the reason, according to a post shared Thursday on the game’s official X account.
While development “continues wholeheartedly,” the team explained that the extra time is needed to fine-tune the port’s performance. It’s a move that, while disappointing, isn’t entirely unexpected. Reports from Gamescom back in August painted a rough picture of the Switch 2 version, with frame rate drops and graphical hiccups occurring during basic gameplay — essentially, anything more demanding than standing still.
That’s not ideal for a game like Elden Ring, where fluid combat and immersive exploration are key. The Switch 2 has shown promise with other demanding titles — Cyberpunk 2077, Split Fiction, and Star Wars Outlaws all landed on the console with surprisingly solid performance. But Elden Ring is a different beast. Its scale, complexity, and visual ambition demand more than just raw power — they require careful optimization.
The Tarnished Edition will include both the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, making the wait a bit more worthwhile. Still, it’s a reminder that even with upgraded hardware, not every port is plug-and-play.
FromSoftware’s decision to delay suggests a commitment to quality over speed. And for a game as beloved and intricate as Elden Ring, that’s probably the right call.
