It feels as though every few weeks Grand Theft Auto 6 will trend on Twitter for one reason or another. However, today’s reason is the most exciting yet. In a tweet posted on the official Rockstar Games Twitter account, it was confirmed that GTA 6 is in development.
That’s right, nine years after the last installment was released Rockstar is finally launching a new Grand Theft Auto. The tweet explains that the delay was caused by its goal: “to significantly move beyond what we’ve previously delivered.” Given that Grand Theft Auto V is one of the best-received video games of all time that will be a serious challenge.
It wasn’t just GTA 6 being confirmed that has fans excited. Rockstar also continued to promise they would share “more as soon as we are ready.” In other words, more details about the next Grand Theft Auto may be on the horizon. Although an exact time frame for that is not provided.
Truth be told, it was already largely assumed that the next Grand Theft Auto was in development. After all, if it wasn’t then fans would likely be waiting several more years before it released. How long it has been in development is unclear, but a decade-long development cycle isn’t out of the question.
End of an era
Since its release in 2013 Grand Theft Auto V has become somewhat of a running joke amongst gamers. Rather than develop new games Rockstar has instead re-launched GTA V across three different generations of consoles. It first appeared on the Xbox 360 and PS3, then Xbox One and PS4, and will soon debut on Series S/X and PS5.
Seeing GTA 6 confirmed is great news as it should signal the end of the GTA 5 remakes. Hopefully, moving forward we can look forward to new and exciting games made by Rockstar rather than playing the same ten-year-old alternatives.
Grand Theft Auto is one of the most successful video game franchises ever made. But it’s been over seven years since we last got a new instalment. But recent leaks suggest that GTA 6 is coming along well and that it could be making some big changes. Most notably, an inside source has claimed that it will be the first Grand Theft Auto to feature a playable female protagonist.
Specifically, the leak says that you’ll be able to play as both a female and a male. It’s unclear exactly what this means. It could be a system similar to GTA V where you could switch between Frankling, Trevor, and Michael. However, it’s not out of the question that we could see some kind of character creator instead.
What we know about GTA 6
The source for this leak is surprisingly trustworthy. Tom Henderson is a well-known and respected source known for several Call of Duty and Battlefield leaks. His Black Ops Cold War leaks in particular have been flawlessly accurate over the last few months.
Unfortunately, we don’t know too much else about GTA 6. Publisher Rockstar Games has kept its cards close to its chest with little to no official information being confirmed. It’s expected to take place in Vice City due to the previous pattern established by the franchise. The mainline games have always rotated between San Andreas, Liberty City, and Vice City.
That’s not the only reason Vice City looks likely though. Last year it was reported that Rockstar was poking around asking various synthwave artists for music clearance. Needless to say, nothing quite says the 1980’s like some good old fashion synthwave. Although given varied and large GTA V’s soundtrack was, this hardly confirms GTA 6.
Regardless of when it comes out, the next Grand Theft Auto will be one of gaming’s biggest releases. After all, GTA V is the most grossing video game ever published. Over two years ago it had made Rockstar over $6 billion. With the amount of microtransactions present it’s fair to assume that number has climbed considerably since. And whilst GTA V is still raking in the numbers, I doubt Rockstar will feel any need to rush GTA 6 out.
Even though GTA 5 still hasn’t made it on PCs yet, it appears that Rockstar are not wasting a second thinking about the future and they have already started to work on Grand Theft Auto 6. It is unclear right now how early the development process is, but it’s at least in discussions, as Rockstar’s president Leslie Benzies admitted.
Speaking to Develop magazine, Benzies said: “We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas”. Benzies continued, saying “It comes from the idea first. Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the missions in.”
45 years worth of ideas, huh? Then why not cram them all in to an amazingly epic game? And no, I don’t mean doing that by hitting us with DLCs every two weeks.
Back to GTA 6, though, it appears that we’re talking about some extremely early stages of development and probably right now the game only has the location set and probably a very thin plot line. Still, Rockstar is working on something and hopefully they won’t feel the need to hurry and deliver a poor product. Oh, wait, they still haven’t released the game on PCs yet, so they’re definitely not in a hurry!
Do you feel at least a bit surprised by the fact that Rockstar has confirmed that they’re already working on GTA 6?
