Sony really knows how to keep things under wraps when they want to. During the most recent State of Play, the final announcement wasn’t just another cinematic trailer—it was a “play it right now” moment. God of War: Son of Sparta just shadow-dropped, and it’s a pretty sharp turn from the massive 3D epics we’ve lived in lately. Instead of the over-the-shoulder perspective, we’re getting a 2.5D Metroidvania. It’s the kind of project fans have been tossing around as a “what if” for years, and seeing it actually sitting there on the PlayStation Store feels a bit surreal.
The timing on this is actually pretty smart. Sony also confirmed that the original God of War Trilogy is getting the remake treatment, but that project is clearly in the “don’t hold your breath” stages of development. It’s going to be a long wait for those. So, to fill the gap, we’ve got Son of Sparta to dig into today. Since this new title is a bit more compact than the Norse sagas, it shouldn’t set your hardware on fire, though it’s funny to see the gap between these lean indies and the PC world. Just recently, Microsoft made waves by suggesting that while 16GB is the baseline, “serious gamers” really ought to be looking at 32GB—especially if they’re eyeing those new Copilot+ PCs.
The Man Behind the God
What’s this one actually about? Well, it pulls us way back. Long before Kratos was tearing through the Greek pantheon or wandering the frozen woods of Midgard, he was a Spartan. This game aims to tell that origin story. The trailer showed off some quick action shots and boss battles that look surprisingly punchy for a side-scroller. It’s the start of the legendary saga, and it’s available for $29.99. Honestly, for thirty bucks, it’s a solid way to scratch that itch.
From the Console to the Small Screen
The news didn’t just stick to the consoles, though. Kratos is heading to television via Prime Video. They’ve ordered a series that will feature Ryan Hurst—you’ll remember him as Opie from Sons of Anarchy—as the lead Spartan. The cast list also includes Mandy Patinkin, which is a wild choice that definitely makes me curious about the tone they’re chasing.
While the TV show is expected to lean into the vibe of the newer Norse games, Son of Sparta is doing the exact opposite by heading back to the series’ roots. It’s a busy time to be a fan, isn’t it? Whether you want to explore Kratos’s early days on your console today or wait for the big-budget remakes and the show, the franchise isn’t slowing down.
