The Sims 4: 5 Reasons Why This Game is a Huge Flop

Sims

After five years, Electronic Arts has finally released a new Sims game but the reception hasn’t been the best so far. Gamers and reviewers are extremely disappointed with the functionality and content of the game. But some go even farther claiming that The Sims 4 is a huge failure. But why exactly? What’s so wrong about Maxis’ new game? Here’s five reasons why The Sims 4 is a huge flop and most likely, the worst of the Sims series so far.

5. Aging Controversy: Teen, Adult or Elder?

In The Sims 4 age seems to be rather meaningless in terms of aesthetics. Whether your sim is a teen, young adult, adult or elder, their height doesn’t change at all and their physical appearance remains pretty much the same all along. Isn’t that a bit controversial? In previous games, teenagers were smaller than adults and elders used to have noticeable wrinkles and body changes, which made them look visibly older. Now, we got a slightly eternal-look system that disregards aging at every level. For some reason, EA now thinks that white/gray hair is all that matters when it comes to create an elder character. So much for a perfectionist life simulator… that’s really not the way in my opinion.

the-sims-4-jobs4. Professions: The Snobbism Effect

Everything in The Sims 4 seems unrealistic and magical, starting by professions. For some reason, all the basic/primal professions have been removed and most of these activities do not exist in game anymore – policeman, fireman, medic, teacher, lawyer and businessman are no longer part of the daily life. And even if the criminal job still exists in this fourth game, thieves do not. Now, we have a list of elitist professions. Hail the snobbism effect: Astronaut, Chef, Criminal, Entertainer, Painter, Secret Agent, Tech Guru and Writer are now the new promising careers. I think we’re getting too far away from reality here. Way too far. But it gets even worse with the inexistence of physical work places. The setback is real and it’s not going anywhere.

sims-4-exercice3. Improvement: What’s New, Really?

The new builder is quite amazing, it’s really intuitive and easy to maneuver – creating houses and decorating them have never been so natural. The new personality system is also reasonable but besides that, what’s new? Nothing really. Innovation and improvement were surely not taken in consideration during the creation of The Sims 4. The whole game looks like a short version of the previous one, The Sims 3, with way less content of course. On the visual side, the graphics are basically the same, nothing stunning or surprising. Finally, the in-game activities are less than before and hobby places like the cinema, theater and stadium are gone, as well as many stores and facility buildings, like the book and grocery stores, the hospital and the cemetery. Déjà vu, anyone?

sims-4-repairr2. Content & Features: Is This a Demo?

The Sims 4 feels like a demonstration. Maybe because I’ve played all the other Sims games before but still, there are so many things missing that it’s quite unbelievable. For example, simple and mundane things like pools, dish washing machine, cars and toddles are not existent in-game. Fires get auto extinguished, broken objects get auto repaired, social services are instantaneous and tax collectors are invisible. Everything happens as pure magic, as if the game was made in a rush and there was not enough time to implement features that have been part of the previous three games. The city panorama was also affected. Now, sims can only visit a few places such as the Park, Lounge, Museum and Gymnasium.

sims-4-park1. Unrealistic World: Peace and Love Baby

I would say that The Sims 4 was created based on a single slogan: “Peace and Love Baby”. Why? Well, with so many things missing the new virtual world is not just unrealistic, it’s like a fantasy world put into a life simulator, where crime only exists if you choose, where bad things are stopped by mystic powers, where primary jobs are part of the past, where swimming is only a dream and where death and sickness are barely extant. Everything is chilled and ordinary, filled with snobbism, glamour and the utopia of a perfect world. In other words, it’s boredom at its best, not realism.

EA ruined maxis, completely. Their Greed for additional DLC has changed this game. You simply can’t get people to purchase the same DLC over and over again. It needs to be included with the base.

The Sims 6 will be subscription based. We all know it’s coming. The death of Maxis continues…Will Wright, how could you let this happen to your (old) company?

(read my name) he did not. its death is drawing near. very near. just like dungeon keeper’s. remember maxi- bullfrog? it was a company just like this one and revolutionized its genre. just like this one, up to the point where it failed. maxis (MAXIS NOT EA) announced they dont give a damn about sims 5, if sims 4 will not be succesful they will not even bother with dlc’s. Maxis scum, ea scum, same thing to me tbh

I agree on every word you said in this article….congrats, that’s basically it…I didn’t play the game but by the reviews and comments this is accurate…how can they do that to the gamers? I mean it shouldn’t exist the word BASE GAME in this world and up that charge for a full game…dlc are made for complementing your gaming experience and not for giving you essential gameplay things…I wanted this game to succeed but right now I just want the opposite…this game NEEDS to fail for the good of the gaming industry and for the gamers!!!!

It’s EA we’re talking about here so it couldn’t be more obvious that they’re saving it all for DLC releases. “You want to be a Policeman? Buy our new Professions DLC! You want pools? Buy our Sims Summer Fun pack!”

They claim it’s “too hard” to put pools into the new engine and that the way people walk is more important than toddlers and models for the elderly… yeeeeaaah (http://kotaku.com/adding-pools-to-sims-4-isnt-easy-says-ea-1619634727).

The fact that they had to release an official statement on their website about it all is proof enough that they’ve made a huge mistake (http://www.thesims.com/news/whats-out-and-whats-in).

I always wanted to get into the Sims but never pulled the trigger. When they announced 4 I decided that I was going to hop on board the bandwagon and enjoy this new game right from the start. But these are huge steps back for the Sims and it has completely eliminated my interest in the new game. I’d rather invest in The Sims 3 with all the expansions if I can find it on sale for a reasonable price. Especially since I’ve been watching Robbaz’s videos on YouTube. That game looks like too much fun and half of the things that make it so entertaining to watch are gone in Sims 4! Such a shame.

Extremely boring game, with all of the charm sucked out of it by corporate aspartame-style graphics and DLC greed.

This truly appeals to the blandest and most casual focus group average.

The pools have been added recently via a free game update. When this article was created, there were no pools in the game.

It’s a sad game. Over 100 things missing from previous games. At least they could’ve made 50 new things to compensate the disgrace but not even that…

Well, the great thing is that things are getting fixed– for free. Free patches to re-add things that should have been in the base game.

Though, there are 50 expansion packs to be added. The good thing about this being… you don’t have to buy them. I bought like three expansions for the Sims 3, and enjoyed the hell out of it.

So, yeah. I’m enjoying Sims 4+mods. I’ll enjoy it even more when the patches add more jobs and pools. They might be re-adding toddlers back in a free-patch as well if this continues.

was never a hardcore fan of the sims 4 but was considering gifting this game to a cousin, EA have really take Maxis down it seems….at first with Simcity, they did a good job on Simcity 4 but then went on to destroy the game and the active community that had formed around it, I’m not an avid gamer but I do love my city building simulations….not one on the market compares to the old ones, I still play Simcity 4.

DRM and the increasingly expensive and complex system of DLC are to blame for why I gave up on the Sims, and ultimately video gaming as a whole.
