Orcs Must Die 3 Review: A Symphony of Chaos and Strategy

Orcs Must Die 3

Orcs Must Die 3 is a game that dominates the often-over-saturated market of chaotic and strategic hybrid games of tower defense and third-person shooters. It is a game that often leaves the players both frustrated and delighted simultaneously, eager to engage in the chaotic struggle to avoid being overrun by hordes of orcs after being blown to pieces. Due to its substantial cult following and focus on the pleasure of slaughtering orcs, the latest installation of the series serves as a highly upgraded version of its ancestor. Often evolving while remaining true to its roots, the game remains satisfying, albeit offering some new twists.

Orcs Must Die 3 Gameplay Mechanics

Orcs Must Die 3, like the previous series games, combines the elements of tower defense games and requires the players to directly prevent the hordes of enemies from penetrating their stronghold. Conducting the intricate process of setting up traps and engaging in the direct combat that the third-person perspective makes possible, the players approach the 18 levels, each of which is a unique challenge. As the player progresses, they receive “skulls” that they can spend on enhancing the previously acquired traps and buying new ones.

Game Modes: Solo and Co-op Experience

While perfectly viable as a single-player game, Orcs Must Die 3 sometimes feels like it was built to be one of those games that are better played with a friend. However, such a perspective is not always an advantage, as the setups of the levels, especially at first glance, seem purposefully designed to make the life of a lone player difficult. As a result, the co-op experience is not always rewarding, as the division of resources is not always fair. The solo experience, however, becomes intensely satisfying once the game’s mechanics are wholly mastered.

War Scenarios and New Modes

War Scenarios introduce large-scale traps in massive battles. However, they sometimes feel like an unnecessary extension, not an epic confrontation. Still, the new modes like Scramble and Endless give variety to the overall experience and give a roguelike-mode twist to the game where you make quick, tough decisions.

Orcs Must Die 3 Story and Characters

I am not going to lie; the story is weak. The characters, the orc’s slayers and the soldiers are not very engaging personalities; you feel like they do not have a background story or motivation; they just serve as a troop to kill the orcs. However, you can feel the youthful energy of the new orc-slayers in dialogue sometimes, and their humor can sometimes bring out a chuckle to your mind. And yes, the story is the bridge between two levels to serve you the real thing, killing the orcs.

Visuals and Performance

While Orcs Must Die 3 does not offer the best graphic I have ever seen, it still shines in its beautifully animated cutscenes and polished visuals. Thanks to its simple controls, it introduces new traps smoothly without giving you a headache. However, I sometimes feel like my game is about to crash due to performance problems. In Endless mode, at some points, the game asks you to put in lots of effort and tests the limits of your PC.

Stadia Launch and Future Hopes

Making a debut as a timed exclusive on Stadia, Orcs Must Die 3 has skillfully employed the platform’s capabilities, allowing you to play the game on different devices and switch between them as you please. However, the reliance on a stable internet connection for streaming resulted in some hiccups along the way. Fans hope they can cherish the game on other platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch or Steam, without experiencing similar streaming issues.

Final Thoughts on Orcs Must Die 3

Orcs Must Die 3 highlights that the franchise still endures, updating its strategy and action in a finely-tightened mix. It doesn’t push the series to distant shores. Still, it’s a better version of what comes before: rewarding tactics and sprint-action. Whether you’re a series veteran or a newcomer, you will find joy in orchestrating the perfect orc massacre. While it has its issues, Orcs Must Die 3 offers a comfortable and cherished brand of chaotic fun that will sustain players for hours.
