In 2019, Google opened up a space for gamers and video games in general to grow, their cloud service was called Google Stadia, with the promises of seamless streaming of AAA titles, the service was launched exuberantly, but unfortunately, it didn’t last long, as the Stadia’s cloud gaming service utterly flopped one way or another, but the biggest question yet that remained unanswered is what’s the reason behind its downfall, and why was it declined globally.
The Right Console for Cloud Gaming On Various Devices
Undeniably Google Stadia was revolutionary, It was unquestionably surprising to see a tremendously massive video game like Red Dead Redemption 2 run on a tiny device. This weightless and nearly nonexistent cloud service had a single purpose, and that was to disrupt the gaming industry. Sadly, its life was short and slept midst.
Stadia aimed to compete with other cloud game services, and Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud stream, Xbox’s Cloud Gaming, and Nvidia’s Geforce Now were some of their primary targets. Stadia offered free and paid service subscriptions, it was integrated with YouTube for sharing gameplay. And because it was Google’s product, streaming with it was much easier than any other device.
Unlike, other streaming services, where you had to log in to some application or a massive media website, It required nothing, just a browser, and that was all. The console inevitably was the peak of cloud gaming.
What is Google Stadia?
Before we unveil, what was the reason behind Google Stadia’s downfall, let’s uncover what the service offered. Google Stadia simply was a cloud-based gaming service, that aimed to revolutionize gaming. It was designed to work seamlessly on various devices and for gamers from different regions of the world. Whether it is laptops, computers, mobile phones, or even tablets, players had to navigate through Stadia’s official website to immerse themselves in the gaming diversity.
The servers were lifting Stadia’s heavy load. People had access to AMD 2.7GHz x86 processor with 16GB RAM, up to 484GB/s transfer speed. To bear the playable gameplay, players needed an internet connection of at least 10Mbps. In short, a fast internet connection was required for any activity.
Regardless of what device you were using, the Stadia offered gaming at 1080p to 4k with up to 60 FPS with HDR. The catch was, that you needed to subscribe to Stadia Premium for a 4k resolution gameplay, while 1080p was completely free for anyone and everyone.
Following Google Stadia’s downfall, you can use its existing controller wirelessly with Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the control also has a limited life span, it will be active and working up to 31st December 2024. For that, you need to install some drives, and there’s nowhere else to go, their official website is alive with the only purpose of benefiting you before sleeping once and for all.
Challenges and Concerns That The Cloud Service Had to Face
Google is always inventive and quicker when it comes to experimenting. However, despite being nearly flawless, they make trivial mistakes. Google Stadia wasn’t a mistake, it flopped because of Google’s lack of attention.
There wasn’t a single fault in Google Stadia, it was brimming with imperfections. The globe was upset with Stadia’s outrageous requirement. It required a fast internet connection, which wasn’t possible for many, even U.S. Citizens. People who were close to proximity servers and those who were paying heavy bills made the most out of Stadia’s gaming experience. A sudden buffer would ruin your experience. In Stadia achieving high-resolution gaming without lag was crucial more or less.
Despite a strong technological foundation, gaining user traction was also one of the reasons for Google Stadia’s downfall. The user base grew but not at the pace Google was expecting. The user base remained limited, hindering Stadia’s growth and influence.
Stadia struggled to get exclusive titles. With a tiny library that isn’t as massive as other cloud gaming services, the gamers had no choice but to move on. And funny enough many gamers were unaware that such a thing exists.
Another nuisance in their way was the lack of developers’ support. Video game companies had the intuition that Google Stadia’s downfall was near. Without a strong foothold in the gaming industry, there was nothing back Google Stadia’s Downfall. However, indie developers and small creators had invested in the Stadia and wished their games to bear fruit.
Overall, whether it is today or tomorrow Google Stadia’s downfall was certainly going to happen. Technically, it didn’t have any faults, just the user base wasn’t there, and advertising was also lacking.
Future of Google Stadia: What Will Be Coming Next?
Google’s vision from the beginning was to offer video games to various screens instantly. The cloud gaming service lived for about 3 years, after the services were shut down, google refunded all of the credits that were used to purchase video games.
Google Stadia doesn’t have a future, the cloud streaming fanatics are now switching to alternatives to indulge in similar gameplay. Amazon Luna, NVIDIA GeForce Now, and Xbox Cloud Gaming are still serving their loyal user base.
Conclusion: Unraveling The Story Behind Google Stadia’s Downfall
Initially, people and gamers were reacting to Google Stadia, but after a certain period, they realized there was nothing special left to do, it was time to move on. Which is what caused Google Stadia to crumble. On January 18, 2023, Google put a pause on the cloud service.
Before ceasing its services, google launched an update to benefit its beloved users. The update was regarding the controller’s accessibility, they added the Bluetooth drivers to make it compatible with other devices. Believe it or not, the controller was smooth and mesmerizing to control.
