21 Fun Family Games to Make Mother’s Day Unforgettable

family games

Mother’s Day is one of my best times of the year. It is a day to honor the lady who has showered me with love, support, and direction throughout my life. Through the years, I learned that the most special of gifts, flowers, and restaurants don’t make Mother’s Day special, but rather quality time and laughter. Playing games as a family is one of the finest ways to create those moments. A family game has a way of bringing laughter, connection, and some good old-fashioned rivalry, and from my experience, people enjoy that. No matter how many – or how few – of you there are, young or old, these 21 fun family games are just the ticket to create a memorable Mother’s Day together!

Reason Behind Adding Games to Mother’s Day

After all the traditional breakfast in bed and present opening, the day can sometimes lose momentum. People might become bored or lose focus. This is why I enjoy adding family games into our activities. Family games engage everyone, create good memories, and, most importantly, give the star of the day a chance to see how much we really value spending time with her. Playing games is a silent way to express our appreciation for her.

21 Family Games to Celebrate Mom

Mother’s Day Scavenger Hunt

This is one of my favorites. You hide hints in the house or the yard, each leading to a small surprise or a clue for Mom. This last clue could lead them to a gift or a card. It’s fun to watch everyone come together and see Mom’s excitement level grow as she finds each clue.

Mother, may I?

This is a timeless game for Mother’s Day. Everyone must genuinely request permission to move forward to reach the mother. Then mom will accept or deny your request as the game goes on. It’s incredibly simple, silly, and enjoyable for younger children, but adults can also participate!

Mother’s Day Charades

Our family always enjoys a game of charades. We tailor the prompts to Mom-centric things like “making breakfast,” “gardening,” or “reading a book.” It’s funny to watch people pretend doing everyday activities.

Mommy Says

This board game is a fun variation of Simon Says. The trick is to only follow commands that start with “Mommy says.” It’s a great way to test listening skills and get everyone laughing.

Name That Tune: Mom Edition

We make a playlist of Mom’s favorite songs and play just a few seconds of each. The first person to guess the song gets a point. This game always sparks stories about when Mom first heard the song or why she loves it.

Best Bouquet Contest

Create a flower station using either real or faux blooms. Everyone makes a bouquet for Mom, who will choose her favorite. This is a fun way to show appreciation, and Mom gets to keep the flowers.

Breakfast-in-Bed Relay Race

Split into teams, and race to put together a breakfast tray for Mom. Each person adds an item while balancing the tray. Whichever team gets the entire breakfast to mom’s bed first wins. A cute way to get everyone involved in spoiling Mum a little.

Mother’s Day Write, Pass, Draw

The game is a hybrid of Telephone and Pictionary. Person 1 writes a sentence about Mother’s Day, Person 2 draws it, Person 3 writes a sentence based on the drawing, and so on. The end results are always humorous and shocking.

Balloon Stomp

Each player has a balloon tied to their ankle, and you must try to pop everyone else’s while keeping yours intact. To put a spin on Mother Day, write little notes with nice things to do for Mom and put them in the balloons. If a balloon pops, the person must do what the note says.

Chocolate Challenge

family games

Balance a small chocolate bar on your forehead and try to wiggle it into your mouth using only the muscles in your face. It’s silly and hilarious, and suitable for all ages.

Mother’s Day Bingo

Design bingo cards with activities or items related to Mother’s Day, such as “give Mom a hug,” “give mom a compliment,” or “favorite flower.” As you finish squares, cross off the ones you’ve done. It is a family game that everyone can play.

Gold Stacker

Within 1 minute, see how many candies you can stack on a tongue depressor or popsicle stick that you are holding in your mouth. It looks easier than it is and always gets the giggles from everyone.

Cook-Off Challenge

Cook-Off Challenge

Hold a contest for the tastiest dish with Mom-approved ingredients. Mom will judge the results, and everyone gets to enjoy the delicious results. It’s a wonderful way to bond in the kitchen.

Lights Out

Shut off the lights and play hide-and-seek or flashlight tag. The darkness adds excitement and makes the game feel fresh and thrilling.

Mother’s Day Pictionary

Draw Mother’s Day-themed words or phrases while teammates guess. Using a whiteboard or paper, this game brings out everyone’s creativity and often some hilarious drawings.

Family Trivia: All About Mom

Prepare trivia questions about Mom’s likes, dislikes, childhood stories, and funny memories. The person who answers the most questions correctly wins. This game always brings laughter and sometimes surprises.

Freeze Dance

Prepare a playlist with Mom’s favorite songs and get everyone dancing. Everyone has to freeze once the music stops. Anyone caught moving is out. The game is very easy and lively, which gets everyone smiling.

Karaoke Party

Karaoke Party

Finish the day with family karaoke, singing your mom’s favorite songs. Singing together is a fun bonding experience, where you get a chance to be silly and have fun.

Leave Mom Alone Game

Each player begins the game with a predetermined number of points. Whenever Mum is asked a pointless question, they lose a point. The individual who has the most points remaining at the end is the winner. This is a great way to give Mom some much-needed peace and quiet.

Mother’s Day Relay

Organize a relay race with amusing tasks such as walking with a spoon full of water or jumping on one leg. The winning team gets to help Mom with a special task or treat her to a homemade spa session.

Custom Crossword or Word Search

Make a crossword or word search using vocabulary and clues related to Mom and your family. This is a nice, quiet activity to do together and makes a great keepsake.

My Favorite Mother’s Day Game Memories

In hindsight, the Mother’s Days I remember fondly are the ones that were spent laughing and hanging out with one another. One year, we set up this giant scavenger hunt with clues hidden throughout the house. Seeing Mom smile as she solved each clue was worth all the effort! Another time we set up a karaoke night, and everybody sang silly songs and danced around the room. When those moments happened, I felt like I was close to home and thankful for having such a wonderful woman as my mother.
