Everything You Need to Know About the Stardew Valley Silo: A Farmer’s Guide

Stardew Valley Silo

If you are entering the peaceful but difficult gameplay of Stardew Valley, then you know how important it will be to run an efficient farm. The Silo is arguably one of the best buildings and sadly also a bit underutilized. You use the Stardew Valley Silo to store hay for the winter months, as you constantly need it to feed your animals. This Stardew Valley Guide will show you everything about Silo, covering their usage, purchase locations, and construction. You’ll also learn how to obtain hay from silos. This guide has everything you need to know about silos in Stardew Valley.

How to Use Stardew Valley Silo?

This is necessary if you will be raising animals (cows, chickens, goats or sheep) in Stardew Valley. The main purpose of the Silo is to store hay. This will then be needed in order to feed your animals.

Cut some grass with the scythe for a bit of hay on your farm and Silo will collect these automatically. This also means that you do not have to pick it up on your own. One Hay Silo can hold up to 240 pieces of hay at a time. You will think it is plenty when you are just starting. But, you will burn through it if your farm gets bigger and it’s important to stay ahead.

It is a very simple process. You mow the grass, it immediately becomes hay due to Silo storage. At home take hay from the Silo and fill up those feeding troughs in your barn(for cows/pigs) or coop(for chickens). Food for your animals will keep them happy and perform better at work. Consequently, happy animals mean they will benefit you with good milk or eggs.

Moreover, if in the winter you run out of hay to feed your animals this can be bought from Marnie’s Ranch.

In Stardew Valley, you can’t directly purchase a Silo, but you can ask Robin, the local carpenter, to build one for you. To find Robin, head to Robin’s Carpenter Shop, located northeast in Pelican Town. The shop’s hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, every day except Tuesdays and festival days. This allows you to plan your visit accordingly.

How to get Robin to build a Silo for you?

Step 1: Gather Materials

You’ll need:

  • 100 Gold — You can collect this much gold with minimal effort, even in the early game.
  • 100 Stone — Stone is common and easy to get by destroying rocks with your pickaxe, especially if you venture into the mines.
  • 10 Clay — Clay is a little more elusive, but you can get it when tilling the soil for planting crops or digging through dirt in the mines and while panning.
  • 5 Copper Bars – You can create copper bars by first mining copper ore and then smelting it in a furnace.

Step 2: Go to Robin’s Woodshop

With the materials in hand, go to Robin at her Carpenter Shop. From here select “Construct Farm Buildings” and choose the Silo.

Step 3: Choose a Location

Once you click on the Silo, decide where in your farm to put it. Do not worry, it does not need too much space (3×3 tiles) so you will find where to place. If the Silo is used, two days will have to pass in-game time for it to be ready for use again.

If you are going to make a cartel farm that has quite many animals, it would be wise to have some more of the Silos. Every Stardew Valley Silo will hold a maximum of 240 hay and you should have stockpiled during the season to feed your animals through Winter.

Stardew Valley Silo: How to Get Hay Out?

You can easily get hay out of a Silo in Stardew Valley. How you do this depends on whether or not you keep your chickens in a barn versus a coop.

Using a Coop or Barn. The easiest way to get Hay out is this hopper (assuming you have upgraded your barn/coop). Interact with the hopper to retrieve hay from your Silo. As soon as you give the command your animal will either put hay into its storage right away. Or if the animal requires food then add directly to their feeding though. Remember to feed the trough regularly, unless you have grass for your animals.

Collect Manually If you choose to keep an Auto-Grabber tool, then going around your farm and collecting things like hay from animals will be automatic. But the Auto-Grabber will not work in a Silo. You will still have to fetch hay manually from the hopper in your coop or barn.

If you one day notice that your Silo is running down on hay, think of planting some more grass or buying extra Hay from Marnie’s Ranch. Marnie sells hay for 50 gold each, meaning a few of these can become quite expensive if you need many. Ideally, you should be cutting hay during the warmer months to store as much as you can before cold weather hits.

Conclusion

The Silo in Stardew Valley is a must have for any farmer who keeps animals. It saves time storing hay and keeps your animals fed, especially during the winter when grass is no longer available. Building a Silo early in the game is setting yourself up for success and keeping your farm running smooth.

If you decide to expand your farm, and demand for hay grows accordingly – start building more Silos. Collect the ingredients, visit Robin and start storing hay right away.
