PS Plus, Games With Gold Freebies For October 2016

PS

It is that time again. Sony and Microsoft have released their offerings for Games with Gold and PlayStation Plus for the month of October. For the first time in a little while, I can say get hyped if you’re on the Sony side of things. And even if you are not, you can always become a Sony fanboy, nobody would mind now, right?

Here are the free games for PlayStation users on all platforms, make sure you check out our list below and download them all:

  • Resident Evil – PS4
  • Transformers: Devastation – PS4
  • Mad Riders – PS3
  • From Dust – PS3
  • Code: Realize ~Guardian Of Rebirth~,  PS Vita
  • Actual Sunlight – PS Vita

Wow. Sony wanted to make a statement this month with a ridiculously solid headliner. One of the most influential games in the history of video games and a surprisingly fun action game from the legendary Platinum Games.

Resident Evil, the GameCube remake of the original title is one of the best remakes of all time. It perfected and changed everything that needed work in the original while keeping what makes the base game so pure and important. It is most surprising to me that it still manages to look that good on what was at one point limited hardware. The power of pre-rendered backgrounds!

Beyond this, we get the shockingly fun and solid Transformers: Devastation, another well-crafted action game that demonstrates that Platinum Games might be the Telltale of Japan.

Rounding this out is From Dust, one of my absolute favourite indies on the PlayStation platform. A simple yet elegant concept coupled with fantastic art direction and some superbly crafted gameplay segments. Or, in other words, something you definitely shouldn’t skip.

And now it’s time for the slightly underwhelming Xbox offerings.

    • Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings – Xbox One
    • The Escapists  – Xbox One
    • MX vs ATV Reflex – Xbox 360
    • I Am Alive – Xbox 360

I honestly don’t have much to say for this batch. While I can’t directly say that any of these games are good or bad having played only one of them briefly, it is very underwhelming given Sony’s fantastic freebies.

I Am Alive, a game stuck in development hell for far too long, is a mostly solid survival game that offers some unique mechanics and an interesting world to explore. It’s by no means a great game, but it’s worth the bandwidth and hard drive space.

Beyond that, I’ve heard good things about The Escapists, so I guess this will be my chance to check it out.

PS Plus, Games With Gold Freebies For September 2016

PS

With Final Fantasy XV PS being moved back to November, this might be the perfect time for another batch of free games from both Sony and Microsoft.

While this month isn’t astounding by any means, it has a few very good games that are easily worth the download.

Check out the free PlayStation games for the month of September, accompanied by another trailer that only shows off one-third of the offerings.

  • Journey – PS4
  • Lords of the Fallen – PS4
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands – PS3
  • Datura – PS3
  • Badland – PS4, PS3,  PS Vita
  • Amnesia: Memories – PS Vita

It is amusing to me that the headliners for this month are both one of my personal favourites ever made and one of my least favourites respectively.

Journey is a ridiculously gorgeous masterpiece that absolutely everyone needs to try. It is best played in one sitting with the lights off and a great sound system or headset to accompany you. It is a transformative experience that helped define indie games as art. Lords of the Fallen, however, achieves none of this.

It has a cult following which I can respect, but Lords failed to impress me in any way and actively angered me to the point of one refund and two deletions upon re-entry. It is Bad Souls and that’s about it.

Rounding out this list with Prince of Persia is a nice addition, considering that like the Sands, it was also forgotten after the atrocious Prince of Persia reboot in 2008. This game scrapped the cel-shading and went back to what made the franchise good. Too bad it never got any recognition, however.

With all of that said, here are the freebies from Microsoft.

    • Earthlock Festival Of Magic- Xbox One
    • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China  – Xbox One
    • Forza Horizon – Xbox 360
    • Mirror’s Edge – Xbox 360

It might be that I am getting senile in my 25 years on this planet, but I swear Mirror’s Edge has been free at least 47 times. That said, it’s still a genre-bending classic so that alone is worth the download if you somehow skipped it all these years.

On the flip side, Earthlock seems like a curious little game. I saw some negativity around the technical aspects of the game, featuring crashes and other such issues, but beyond that, it seems to be quite a fun ride.

Finally, Forza Horizon is probably the smartest move this month from Microsoft, as it is the best way to get anyone not already on board with Horizon to try it out before Horizon 3 launches later this year.

PS Plus, Games With Gold Freebies For August 2016

PS

While I am sadly a little late on this, both Sony and Microsoft have announced and released the next batch of freebies for the PS and Xbox platforms respectively, and it seems to be a decent month for us yet.

These are your PlayStation freebies for August – this time with a trailer because Sony is inconsistent and strange.

  • Tricky Towers – PS4
  • Rebel Galaxy – PS4
  • Yakuza 5 – PS3
  • Retro/Grade – PS3
  • Patapon 3 – PSP, PS Vita
  • Ultratron – PS4, PS3, PS Vita

Yet another diverse month for Sony. From the brilliant Yakuza series to an indie space western to two completely different rhythm games, all bases are covered.

Rebel Galaxy, in particular, tickled my fancy, though it’s a bit unfortunate that No Man’s Sky came out mere days after we got this for free. I think Rebel Galaxy will continue to go unnoticed while an infinitely more intriguing, widely popular game of the same genre happen to release almost immediately after. Such a shame.

Here are the freebies for Xbox owners this month.

    • WARRIORS OROCHI 3 Ultimate  – Xbox One
    • WWE2K16  – Xbox One
    • Spelunky  – Xbox 360
    • Beyond Good and Evil HD – Xbox 360

I was beyond hyped to see a Warriors game get the free treatment, so it’s quite disappointing that Warriors Orochi 3 is potentially my least favourite in the franchise thus far. It is a confusing, ugly and jarring mess of a game that I can’t seem to get into.

However, it’s nice to see that for those of us who still haven’t played Beyond Good and Evil, we now have no excuse to skip it, and can then join the community online in protest for a sequel!

16 Amazing Classic PC Games that You Can Play for Free in 2016

If you are like me, around 30 years old or older and you consider yourself a gamer, it means that you were lucky enough to see the evolution of PC games – and gaming in general – since its beginnings on MS DOS. Most likely, you have played a ton of games that are now considered classics and you might be wondering already if you could play them again. We’re here to help you replay some of the great games of the days gone by sharing 16 amazing classic PC games that you can now play for free, legally and let nostalgia fill your body.

For most of these games, you will need to first install an MS Dos emulator like DosBox (free here) but it’s all worth it. So let’s not waste a single second and let’s check out below 16 amazing classic PC games which can be player for free right now!

best classic pc games to play for free 01

1. Command & Conquer: Red Alert

This still remains one of my favorite RTS games of all times and I am probably not the only one who can say that. Even more, I am sure that I will always love Tanya and be secretly in love with her. Again, I am probably not the only one who says that. Either way, you have to play or replay this game: it’s classic RTS at its best and it will rarely get any better than this. You can download the game for free here.

2. Beneath a Steel Sky

There was a time when point and click adventure games were smart, unique, fun to play and extremely popular. For some reason, the genre died slowly and even though we do have some promising releases every now and then, its Golden Age is long gone. Beneath a Steel Sky is one of those stellar adventure games that you could play back in the day and be extremely excited about it. It’s true, there were other point and click adventures that were more popular and maybe slightly better, but this one’s available for free and it’s still absolute gold! Download the game for free on GoG.com.

3. Descent

For some reason, I never enjoyed Descent even though the entire world seemed to think otherwise. There was something utterly unappealing to it back in the days and even today I feel a slight repulsion when thinking about it. But I am not here to recommend my favorites, I am here to recommend great games and I would lie if I told you this was not one of them. So hop into your ship and experience first person shooters a la 90s! Download the game for free here.

4. The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall

The Elder Scrolls franchise is one of the best known and most beloved RPG franchises out there and it’s actually surprising to see that one of the legendary games in this series is offered for free. But good guy Bethesda is good again and offers the game as a free download so you can relive those great moments before Skyrim was real. And it still feels pretty awesome! Click here to download the game for free.

5. The Ur-Quan Masters

Although we’re not really talking about the original Star Control II game but a remake, it’s almost the same thing and those who have played the original many years ago will be happy to get the chance to play it one more time. This is indeed one of the best games of all times, and it’s a bit FTL, a bit adventure and a bit everything else. It’s absolutely impressive that a game created over 20 year ago could be that epic. But, here it is! Download it for free here.

6. Tyrian 2000

One of the best known vertical scrolling shooters that fills your heart with joy and the screen with bullets. Pure, mindless fun that remains fun even today. And it does sound a bit like Tyrion from Game of Thrones, and everybody loves him. So even though there’s absolutely no connection between the two, love is in the air! You can download the game for free on GoG.com.

best classic pc games to play for free 07

7. Wolfenstein 3D

This is the first FPS game in the world. This started it all and Call of Duties, Battlefields, Dooms and all other first person shooters are related to it. Of course, things have changed and fortunately improved significantly since it was released, but I am sure you will still have a great deal of fun shooting down the bad guys and sliding over all walls in a level looking for hidden doors. Click here to download the game for free right now!

best classic pc games to play for free 08

8. Flight of the Amazon Queen

One of the funnest point and click adventure games I have ever played (similar to the Lucas Arts and Sierra classics), Flight of the Amazon Queen is a must play if you haven’t played it and a must replay if you did. It has a bit of everything, but most importantly high quality humor and you will absolutely love it! You can download the game for free here.

best classic pc games to play for free 09

9. Championship Manager: Season 01/02

Although this is clearly not a game everybody remembers and clearly not a game everybody would enjoy or even play, it is one of the best known and considered the best football management game that was ever created. There are still a ton of people who play it regularly even today, 15 years after its original launch. So if you are a fan of the Football Manager franchise (as it’s now called), CM 01/02 is a must play or replay! Click here to download the game (scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the “CM Season 01/02 Download” link under “External Links”.

best classic pc games to play for free 10

10. Lemmings

Ah, the crazy and funny lemmings that needed your help to reach point B from point A. A truly unique puzzle game that, for some reasons, hasn’t been remade and updated, making it even more valuable for those who love a bit of a brain teasing from their games. You can download the game here.

best classic pc games to play for free 11

11. Dune 2000

Dune 2 is the first real strategy game I have played and the first real RTS in the world. Just like Wolfenstein 3D, this is a piece of history. And even though the original Dune 2 is not available as a free download, its Dune 2000 remake is – and it’s basically the same thing, but with slightly updated graphics. You have to replay it, play it and love it. And realize that you can still win the game with a different house than the Harkonnen. Click here to download the game.

best classic pc games to play for free 12

12. One Must Fall 2097

For a fighting game that doesn’t have a ton of characters to choose from and not even a lot of moves that your fighters can pull, its popularity and high entertainment values can be considered surprising. Probably the fact that it has robots makes it a lot better… but it doesn’t matter in the end. What matters is that OMF 2097 is an amazing game that can be played for free. You can download it here.

best classic pc games to play for free 13

13. Golden Axe

Available on multiple platforms (and slightly different on each if I remember correctly), this is pure Arcade room fun. Make sure that you bring a friend over and play it in coop (but try not to fight too much over who plays the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead!). Download the game for free here.

best classic pc games to play for free 14

14. Railroad Tycoon

This is another game that basically started an entire genre, and in this case we’re talking about the Tycoon genre. It might look and feel a bit outdated, but if you played it when it first came out, you’ll feel at home really fast and you’ll find it really fun to rebuild your transport empire once again. Download the game for free here.

best classic pc games to play for free 15

15. Supaplex

I absolutely loved this puzzle game and I think that it’s one of the most underrated games ever created. Extremely difficult, with a ton of content, smart puzzles and also a game that requires perfect runs, Supaplex is still great today and remains fun for people all ages. Must play! Click here to download the game.

best classic pc games to play for free 16

16. Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar

One of the best known and most appreciated games of all times is available for download for free! Launched over 30 years ago, the game had so much content and is so impressive that it can clearly be considered too ambitious for the period it was launched in. An amazing game that might not seem too much fun for first time players, but for those who had already spent hours in its company it will be nothing but sweet, pure joy. Download the game for free on Good Old Games.

There you have it: 16 amazing classic PC games to play in 2016. There are still other great gems left out there and available as free downloads on Abandonware sites or in other places, so if we forgot to mention any great games that are now available for free, let us know by commenting below.

PS Plus, Games With Gold Freebies For June 2016

PS

With May coming to an end, it is once again time to celebrate free games with the latest batch of PlayStation Plus and Games With Gold picks for the month of June. However, I think the celebration this month might be a bit hampered as the offerings are possibly the least interesting that they’ve been in months.

These are your PlayStation freebies for June – this time without a trailer because reasons.

PSPLUSJUNE

  • NBA 2K16 – PS4
  • Gone Home: Console Edition – PS4
  • Echochrome – PS3
  • Siren: Blood Curse (Episodes 1-12) – PS3
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus – PSP, PS Vita
  • Little Deviants – PS Vita

While I don’t want to come off as overly negative, this month is quite lazy from my perspective. For huge sports fans, most of you will probably already own NBA 2K16, but as it is a very solid game, it’s cool for those who missed it. Gone Home, while entertaining, failed to capture me as it divulged into preachy territory, abandoning what I considered to be the most interesting aspects that it began with.

None of the other titles are bad per se, it’s just that they’re games most of us already have. Little Deviants was one of the only launch titles for Vita, and Echochrome was one of the most interesting PlayStation Network titles when it arrived years ago.

That said, if you missed the boat you should feel entertained with such a diverse offering.

And without further adieu, these are the Games with Gold freebies for June.

    • Goat Simulator  – Xbox One
    • The Crew  – Xbox One
    • Super Meat Boy  – Xbox 360
    • XCOM Enemy Unknown – Xbox 360

For those of you who felt that Grid 2 from last month lacked a huge open world to explore with friends, The Crew should feel right at home if you don’t already own it. I’ve neglected it for far too long, so this is actually my favourite freebie from Microsoft this month.

Ending the list with a game as phenomenal as XCOM or a game as crushingly difficult as Super Meat Boy, you should be in for a treat if you somehow them thus far.

PS Plus, Games With Gold Freebies Of April 2016

April is nearly here, and with it comes another great batch of free games from both Sony and Microsoft respectively. While Sony seems intent on offering indies and older games that you might’ve missed, Microsoft seemingly wants to demonstrate how you tackle April in style, as their offering might be the best I’ve seen in months.

Before we get to Microsoft though, here are the freebies for April.

  • Dead Star – PS4
  • Zombi – PS4
  • I Am Alive – PS3
  • Savage Moon – PS3
  • A Virus Named Tom – PS Vita
  • Shutshimi – PS Vita

Although there is nothing spectacular here, I’m quite pleased to see Zombi make the cut, as I was debating picking it up a few weeks back. Although it received mix reception, I can’t help but get the urge to jump into a never-ending zombie nightmare.

It’s also great to get another interesting space game, as I refuse to get tired of them. Dead Star eluded me and so I will be going in completely blind, but it certainly looks promising!

For Xbox owners, here are the games you will receive for the month of April.

    • Sunset Overdrive  – Xbox One
    • The Wolf Among Us  – Xbox One
    • Dead Space  – Xbox 360
    • Saints Row IV – Xbox 360

Wow. One of the biggest games on Xbox One is now free for anybody with a Gold subscription. I have wanted to play Sunset Overdrive for as long as I’ve owned an Xbox so again, this is a fantastic freebie. Ridiculously over the top action in an open-world full of actual colour!

What’s more is, there aren’t any slackers this month, as Dead Space is a phenomenal horror game, Saints Row IV is open-world zany madness, and The Wolf Among Us is Telltale at their absolute best. You really cannot go wrong.

Play Over 2,000 Classic MS-DOS Games for Free in Your Browser

MS-DOS

God, I just had a nostalgia overdose after checking out the Archive.org offering of classic MS-DOS games: over 2,000 titles are available for free and playable in your browser, from classic hits like the original Price of Persia or Wolfenstein, to amazing titles like The Oregon Trail, Supaplex, Leisure Suit Larry and many, many more.

So if you’re 30 and over, it’s basically your childhood offered once again, for free. This is really worth a complete weekend, hidden in your man cave with a ton of Mountain Dew and cold pizza. Just prepare for a rough time because, since these are available in your browser, progress can’t be saved!

The best part about this huge collection (well, second best part, because it being free tops them all) is that you can always find strange and amazing titles that you have never heard of or played and remember that the early 90s were a great time for extremely original and crazy titles. What they weren’t able to deliver in terms of visuals, they replaced with originality, innovation and sometimes pure craziness.

But enough talking! There are about 2,400 classic MS-DOS games waiting for you, ready to be played for free in your browser, so head over to the Archive.org website and give them a try. You know you want to!

Playstation Plus: Games Of September 2014

Games

With September just around the corner, it’s of course expected that Sony would unveil next month’s free game line-up. Unfortunately it seems that this month is a bit of a disappointment, as the games seem randomly plucked from the Store, especially HOARD.

That said, whether you’ve played games such as Battle Royale or Joe Danger before or not, it doesn’t matter; they’re all entertaining experiences, and at the low price of free, I’m not one to hold a grudge.

  • Velocity 2X (PS4, Vita)

“Use the Quarp Drive teleport to outsmart the evil Vokh in race-tuned space combat, then dock your ship, jump out and continue the fight on foot! Velocity 2X is the visually dazzling action packed sequel to Velocity Ultra, featuring amazing puzzle-platforming action alongside award-winning shooter gameplay!”

  • Sportsfriends (PS4, PS3)

“Sportsfriends is a compendium of award-winning local multiplayer games for living rooms, parties, and even backyards. Featuring: retro-styled fighting game BaraBariBall, QWOP-like pole vault dueling game Super Pole Riders, high-velocity sports game Hokra, and face-to-face physical party game Johann Sebastian Joust. All the games are playable with the DualShock®4 wireless controller, while Johann Sebastian Joust can be further enhanced by the PlayStation Move Motion Controller (sold separately).

  • Playstation All Stars Battle Royale (PS3, Vita)

From Kratos to Sly Cooper, Sweet Tooth to Parappa the Rapper, Sony characters from all over the gaming spectrum are brought together in a fighting adventure that’s both easy to play, and hard to master. Take the battle online for competitive multiplayer action, or go head to head with a group of friends on the couch and prove once and for all who’s really the best!”

  • HOARD (PS3)

“HOARD is an innovative fast-paced arcade action-strategy title from Big Sandwich Games that puts you in control of conquering a medieval kingdom. Your goal is to build a giant pile of gold to sleep on in your lair. YOU ARE THE DRAGON: Scare villages! Burn castles! Collect treasure! Roast pesky knights and thieves! Compete or co-operate with other dragons in epic multiplayer battles!”

  • Joe Danger (Vita)

“Take Joe on a ride from zero to hero in a game that lives up to its big brother with no compromises. Eye-popping super-smooth 60FPS graphics use only the very brightest colours on Vita’s lovely screen, and we’ve revamped the JD control scheme so it plays just as nicely, too, including touch controls for the editor modes!”

  • TxK (Vita)

“Glowing vectors, explosive particle effects and a pulse-pounding soundtrack are core elements of many modern arcade shooters – a style that Llamasoft defined with its seminal 90s tube shooter. TxK is the spiritual successor to that genre-defining work and brings you 100 levels of engrossing score-chasing gameplay, married to an outstanding soundtrack that will have your head nodding as you blast your way onto the scoreboards.”

Playstation Plus: Games of August 2014

Games

As August is upon us, it’s but expected that Sony offers up a new round of free games to bless their beloved consoles and handheld. This month seems to be based on adventure, as we’re given a myriad of different games that base themselves around that premise.

A note-worthy point is that PS Plus members will be getting free access to the new game Road Not Taken, much like last year, where we were given Resogun and Contrast. It’s nice to see brand new games offered up, and we’ll have to see how worthy Road Not Taken is when it launches. For now, here’s the line-up this month.

  • Road Not Taken (PS4)

“From the creators of Triple Town, Road Not Taken is a roguelike puzzle game about surviving life’s surprises. You play as a ranger adventuring through a vast, unforgiving forest in the aftermath of a brutal winter storm, rescuing children who have lost their way. Randomly generated levels deliver a limitless supply of possibilities to explore and challenges to overcome. Your actions will influence not only your own story, but that of the villagers you hope to befriend and the town you call home.”

  • Fez  (PS4, PS3, Vita)

“Gomez is a 2D creature living in a 2D world. Or is he? When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez is sent out on a journey that will take him to the very end of time and space. Use your ability to navigate 3D structures from 4 distinct classic 2D perspectives. Explore a serene and beautiful open-ended world full of secrets, puzzles and hidden treasures. Unearth the mysteries of the past and discover the truth about reality and perception. Change your perspective and look at the world in a different way.

  • Crysis 3 (PS3)

Players take on the role of Prophet as he returns to New York in 2047, 24 years after the events of Crysis 2. He discovers the city has been encased in a giant Nanodome created by the corrupt CELL corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. Prophet is said to be on a “revenge mission” after uncovering the truth behind CELL’s motives for building the quarantined Nanodomes. The citizens were told that the giant citywide structures were erected to protect the population and to clean these metropolises of the remains of the Ceph forces. In reality, the Nanodomes are CELL’s covert attempt at land and technology grab in their quest for global domination by means of debt enslavement.”

  • Proteus (PS3, Vita)

“Proteus is a game about exploration and immersion in a dream-like island world where the soundtrack to your play is created by your surroundings. The primary means of interaction is simply your presence in the world and how you observe it.”

  • Metrico (Vita)

“Metrico is a new world. A living world filled with infographics that react directly to your movement, actions and input. Metrico invites you to explore, experiment, test your skills and most of all: think outside the box. Immerse yourself in this experience, exclusive to PlayStation Vita system, and see if you have got what it takes!”

  • Dragon’s Crown (PS3, Vita)

Dragon’s Crown is a multiplayer hack and slash beat ‘em up game with breathtaking visual style, a design built around cooperative play and epic boss fights, and the ability to discover a new adventure in every play session. Dragon’s Crown allows up to four players to team up online to clear out monster-ridden dungeons, discover precious treasure, and destroy awe-inspiring bosses.

As always, check out the official Playstation Blog for more information.
